The Slowdown Debate
Anthropic's CEO just asked the entire AI industry to slow down.
Then OpenAI's CEO agreed. Then Elon agreed.
Three companies burning billions to beat each other, suddenly aligned on tapping the brakes. That's worth noticing.
Here's what it isn't: a reason for you to stop.
What they're worried about is autonomous agents. Software that runs for hours without a human watching, clicks around the internet on its own, makes calls nobody reviewed. Dario Amodei's warning was about rogue agent swarms threatening large parts of the internet within six to twelve months.
That's a real problem for the people who own the internet's plumbing.
It has nothing to do with you asking ChatGPT to fix a proposal at 4pm because the client wants it by five.
The AI that drafts your emails and cleans up your meeting notes is not the AI anyone is trying to pause. It's been around three years. Nobody's coming to take your laptop.
So keep using it for the writing and the thinking. Go slow on anything that wants the keys to your email, your calendar, and your payments so it can act on your behalf.
Let it draft. You hit send.
While everyone else doom-scrolls the debate, you get a quiet few weeks to actually get good at this.
